How Do Checkups and Cleanings Keep Your Mouth and Body Healthier?
It may sound like a stretch to say that checkups and cleanings can save your life, but the truth is that they can! In recent years, researchers have found a very strong connection between the mouth and body, which has multiple implications. First, gum disease has been shown to significantly increase your risk of heart disease, pregnancy complications, Alzheimer’s, stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers. With regular professional cleanings (and gum therapy when needed), your gums will stay much healthier. This reduces your risk of tooth loss and the many serious conditions just mentioned.
In addition, Dr. Giron does a very thorough evaluation during her exams, so she’s often able to spot the first signs of general health issues in your mouth (for example, patients with diabetes often have inflamed gums). When necessary, she’ll alert you to the possibility of bigger issues early on and recommend seeing your doctor for a possible diagnosis and treatment.
Finally, routine preventive care allows us to spot potential dental problems such as cavities when they’re small and haven’t caused pain or sensitivity yet. This is the ideal time to diagnose these issues because we can provide simple, inexpensive treatment like fillings, rather than major dental work like crowns or root canals.
What Is a Dental Checkup Like?
During your checkup, Dr. Giron will closely examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues, using a variety of diagnostic tools to ensure that everything is healthy. Here are the basic steps involved:
- First, we’ll update and review your health history
- You’ll get a gum exam once a year
- We’ll perform an oral cancer screening that takes just minutes (this is done by both the dentist and hygienist)
- We’ll take digital X-rays that use 90% less radiation, only as needed (typically once per year)
- We’ll evaluate your TMJ
- Finally, Dr. Giron will spend time looking at your teeth and existing dental work. If she sees any issues that need to be addressed, she’ll discuss her recommendations and answer any questions you may have.
What Is a Dental Cleaning Like?
Even with good brushing and flossing habits, you can’t remove all the plaque and tartar from your teeth. With regular cleanings from our gentle, experienced hygienist, your mouth and body will stay a lot healthier.
First, we’ll ask if you have any questions or concerns before we get started. Then we’ll use hand tools or an ultrasonic scaler to remove the hard deposits from your teeth and under your gumline. To make sure you stay comfortable, we’ll check in with you periodically. Then we’ll polish and floss to help your teeth feel slick and smooth and give you tips for your oral hygiene routine at home.
